Portugal Announces Closing of the one Remaining Coal Plant two Years Earlier than Planned

The announcement today that Portugal’s one remaining coal plant is closing 2 years early is inspiring, and bodes for what is to come in many places now that renewable energy is often below the marginal generating cost of coal.

In 2005, with my former colleagues at PowerLight Corporation, we successfully developed and built an 11 MW PV system, on a one axis horizontal tracker, called Serpa in Portugal https://lnkd.in/gQxeKtE8. At the time we announced it, it was the world’s largest solar power plant.

Today most of Portugal’s energy comes from renewables, quite a transformation over the last decade and a half. Read full article here.
